Play Uke, LLC was formed to support our Ukulele Festival, which began in Minden as the Tahoe Area Uke Fest, moved to Sparks under the name Reno-Tahoe Uke Fest and finally became the Reno Uke Fest. So we’ve never been in Reno or Tahoe, until now!

Play Uke partners Douglas Reynolds and Rich Dann met at the first Minden Fest which Doug founded and at which Rich volunteered. The success of the first festival and an invitation from John Ascuaga’s Nugget to move it to the family-run Sparks resort made Rich and Doug realize that they’d have to form a business to please all of the bureaucrats and government bodies. A poll was sent out to the couple of hundred uke fans on the mailing list asking whether to keep the fest as a summer event or move it to spring (which was the Nugget’s request). The results came back a surprising 80-20 in favor of spring.

The Reno Uke Fest has experienced a 30% growth each year. Doug and Rich learned that they could not both run and attend a festival, so they looked to create something they could actually take part in. Rich came up with the idea of a rustic retreat and Doug knew of the perfect place. Viola! The First Annual Tahoe Ukulele Retreat was born.
